(Source of image: The Hindu) An old man and four members of a family were killed as a speeding truck run over them. The incident took place on June 11, at 5.19 am in southwest Delhi’s Najafgarh. The truck driver identified as Rajesh (35) is arrested and booked under sections of rash driving (section 279) and culpable homicide (section 304). The deceased are identified as Jawahar Singh (93), Ashok (30), his wife Kiran (27), and their sons Ishant (5), and Dev (2). SK Meena, the DCP (Dwarka) said, “The accused driver was speeding and driving in a negligent manner. He hit five people on the road and rammed into five parked vehicles. CCTVs are being checked and investigation is on.” As Rajesh was arrested, he told police that he was coming from Haryana and that fell asleep while driving. He lost control of the steering wheel and hit the victims. Police informed him that a medical test will be conducted to see if he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Ashok with his family was on their way to catch a bus to Gurgaon for puja at Sheetla Mata Mandir. CCTV footage of the incident shows the family walking on the side of the road. A truck from the other side runs over them and crashes into a few parked cars. Also, Jawahar Singh was out for a walk. Police said Ashok, Kiran, and Ishant died on the spot while Dev and Singh were rushed to Vikas Hospital for treatment. At the hospital, Singh succumbed to his injuries. Later, Dev was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital but died in the afternoon. For post mortem, the bodies have been sent to the Rao Tularam Memorial Hospital.
