According to police, a 14-year-old girl was cruelly stabbed to death on a road in Pune on Tuesday evening while on her way to kabaddi practise by three people, two of whom were minors.

An official said the murder was presumptively caused by a "one-sided" love connection between a distant relative of the victim, a class 8 student, and two of the suspects, both minors, who were detained hours after the occurrence.

"The girl was on her way to kabaddi practice at Yash Lawns in the Bibewadi area around 5.45 pm. When she was standing with her friends near the lawns, the three accused, one of them a 22-year-old man, came on a motorcycle. While one remained on the motorbike, the other two, including the 22-year-old, attacked her with sharp weapons. They stabbed her multiple times in the throat and other parts of the body. The attack was so brutal that the girl died on the spot, "

said Sunil Zaware, senior inspector at the Bibwewadi police station.

He claimed the trio fled the scene after killing her. However, we were able to catch two minors, but the main accused (who is a major) remains on the loose, he added. Shubham Bhagwat, the 22-year-old accused, is a distant relative of the girl and used to reside at her home, according to Mr Zaware. Her parents asked him to leave the house because he had grown one-sided love for the girl, he explained.

According to Namrata Patil, a senior police official in Zone V, they discovered a "pistol" from the scene that appears like a toy gun.

Ms Patil stated that the police were investigating its authenticity.
