The system of Panchayati Raj is at the grassroot level for our democracy. Jammu and Kashmir(J&K) had been very deprived of our Indian democratic system due to many hurdles like militancy and some other constitutional provisions.

After a long time, J&K local body polls were conducted successfully without any major violence.

The elected members have claimed that they were receiving threat calls from militants that they will be beheaded if they don't resign from their post.

Due to militant's threat, 8-10 panches and sarpanches from the Budgam region of J&K has resigned just a week after the election, government officials say.

However, the administration is taking every step to establish a strong democracy to defeat militancy in J&K and claims that they have not accepted any resignation. Block development officer Mazid Manzoor says that the effort to conduct an election is very hard and it should not vanish. We will find a way to ensure the security of all the candidates who are fighting in the election.

The government has already provided a safe house to hundreds of political activists, elected and nonelected members of J&K who had participated in the 2018 urban local bodies elections.
