A year on Delhi borders by farmers

September 17, a whole year to the hustle between the union government and the farmers under the banner of Sanyukt Kisan Morcha and many other leaderships of farmers started from the borders of Delhi.

The laws are The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act,

The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act and The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act.

After all the politics, hype, meetings, debates, Blame game farmers are still there and the situation is still worse.

Farmers protest

What is the controversy?

Farmers fear of abolishment of Minimum support price (MSP), and of APMC's. According to them, these laws will corporatize the agriculture sector.

Union said the aim is to make farmers the producer and the seller of their own produce. The role of middlemen is not going to end completely but their hold on the trade will not be as strong and APMC will still be available.

According to the Shanta Kumar committee's report of 2015, only 6% of, farmers sell their crops at MSP, and the government only purchases - paddy, wheat, and selected pulses in large quantities.

As none of the laws directly affect the MSP but farmers have fear of abolishment. As reported by some states agriculture is on the state list so how the Center can impose these laws as Laws will also affect states annual revenue in the loss.

Black day by opposition parties

AAP the opposition party of Punjab also the Akali dal(SAD) announced the day as Black Day.

SAD is the party that opposed the laws and even resigned from the union, quite NDA. They opposed the passage of farm laws in Parliament too. Parties held protests. many farmers lose their lives in protest during the year. Rain, covid-19, scorching heat and the Delhi police none can make them disappear from there. In the solidarity of farmers, oppositions are seeing it as a black day.

Same as the other protest this is also now slowly taking the political colour and this can ruin or affect the genuine demands and needs of many farmers sitting in the camps during the whole year, incidents like 26 Jan 2021 should not happen again but the issue of farm laws should also be resolved soon.
