Assam became the first state in the entire country to start a transgender vaccination drive. According to Swati Bidhan Baruah, the founder of All Assam Transgender Association and an associate member of vice-chairperson of the Assam government's transgender welfare board, the initiative put forth the State Health Department considering the sidelining of transgenders from the mainstream vaccination drives.

With the cooperation of the State Government, the first thirty members of the community were vaccinated in the Kamrup district on Friday and will later dive into other parts of the state.

Constituting approx twenty thousand members, the transgender community depends on begging for income, and thus the risk of infections and fatalities is very high.
