Dr. Rashmi Shashikumar (31) a psychiatrist from Vijaynagar, Bengaluru, got arrested yesterday for stealing a newborn baby boy from BBMP government hospital in Chamrajpet a year back. She was working in a private hospital in Bannerghatta, Bangalore.
To repay her loans, the doctor had allegedly struck a deal with the couple promising them a baby to be delivered by a surrogate mother in May 2020. To give effect to her deal Dr. Rashmi, who is original from Chikodi in the Belagavi district of Karnataka, made two futile attempts in the neonatal words in a couple of city hospitals before finally finding success at the BBMP where he found a newborn beside sleeping mother.
The parents of the newborn baby are daily wage earners from Andhra Pradesh. The father, Naveed Pasha, an auto driver who went to see her sister after the baby was born. The attender on the doctor's advice, post-delivery, gave his wife, Hasna Banu, a pill. 45 minutes later when she woke up, the baby was missing. They lodged the missing diary at Chamrajpet police station the next day and the case landed up in Basavanagudi women police station in December 2020. They set a team of 20 police personnel up for the investigation who rummaged through many call records and checked CCTV footages of BBMP Hospital. Among the few suspects identified, only Dr. Shashikumar tried to avoid giving her statement, which made the police even more skeptical. Finally, they zeroed into Dr. Reshmi and post-integration they arrested her last Sunday.
Ironically, Rashmi is behind the bars with her own 45-day-old baby girl in her lap when reports last came in.
