The report comes in from Chandi Tola village of Khagaria district today where six labor workers died. A government high school wall collapsed during the construction of a drain nearby. Pramod Paswan (40), Lalit Kumar Sharma (25), Chhaila Tanti (30), Shivshankar Singh (25), Jhulan Manjhi (25), and Gyandev Paswan (26) were among the people got killed in the accident.
The School wall caved in when the laborers were removing the soil of the drain at around 4 p.m. under Gogri block in the district. The wall was constructed 8 months ago. It was a coincidence that the school was not open when the incident took place. Sources reveal that the drain was being constructed under the ‘Nal-Jal’ scheme of the state. This scheme is supposed to provide clean drinking water to every citizen of Bihar without any discrimination.
The Locals created havoc when the district police and administrative officials reached the place concerned. They demanded enough compensation to the next of kin of the deceased.
An FIR has been lodged at the Maheshkhunt police station in connection with the incident. Police are in search of the contractor. The bodies have been sent to the Sadar hospital for postmortem. Khagaria SP Amitesh Kumar denied anybody else getting injured. Khagaria DM (in charge) Shatrunjay Mishra said Gogri SDO Subhash Chandra Mandal has been asked to submit a detailed report on the incident. CM Nitish Kumar condoled the deaths and gave a statement that a cheque of 4 lakh each as ex gratia payment was given as compensation to the kin of the deceased.
