Bihar Woman Pregnant after 2 years of Sterilization

The state government bears the expense of delivery and medicines above that. For that, the victim has to raise a claim to the health department for such relaxations.

A 30-year-old woman named Phulkumari Devi hailing from Bihar’s Muzaffarpur has claimed that she got pregnant even after undergoing a tubectomy surgery. Tubectomy is a surgical procedure to become sterile.

Devi has moved to the district consumer forum at Muzaffarpur seeking compensation of a total of 11 lakh from the state government. She was operated on in a government hospital. She chose to get operated on as she already had 4 children and did not want more. So she chose to undergo a family planning operation at Motipur Primary Health Centre (PHC) on 27th July 2019. The operation was conducted by Dr. Sudhir Kumar according to the reports.

Her husband is a daily wager who shifted to Panipat in Haryana a couple of months back to earn a livelihood. He told the TOI that they already have three daughters and a son and did not want any more children. Hence they proceeded with the operation. It is nearly impossible for him to bear the expenses of another child. Hence Devi moved to the consumer court demanding 11 lakh in compensation from the state government.

The couple also reported that the doctor who operated on the woman misbehaved with them when they went to him for clarification. Dr. Harendra Kumar Alok, previous Muzaffarpur’s civil surgeon, ordered an inquiry into the matter. He also accepted that such surgeries might fail sometimes.

He revealed that there is a provision of rupees 30,000 as compensation to the victim in such scenarios. The state government bears the expense of delivery and medicines above that. For that, the victim has to raise a claim to the health department for such relaxations.
