BJP candidate shot in Malda by unknown assailants

Unknown assailants shot a BJP candidate from North Bengal on Sunday evening. The BJP candidate belonged to the Malda constituency of North Bengal.

Gopal Chandra Saha, 46, suffered severe bullet injuries late on Sunday evening. Mr. Saha was shot in the neck from a close range. The incident took place in the Sahapur area in Malda. He was immediately rushed to Malda Medical College and Hospital.

Timeline of the incident

Mr. Saha was returning from a roadshow. He went to visit a venue where PM Modi is scheduled to host a rally on April 23.

As per the local BJP Leaders, Saha was sitting in the party office around 9 Pm along with a few workers. A dozen BJP workers and supporters were waiting outside. Satyajit Haldar, a local booth level BJP leader, who was present at the spot spoke about the incident. He said, " Suddenly, we heard a gunshot. Someone from the crowd had fired. The bullet hit Saha at the back of his neck. He was immediately rushed to the hospital where he had to undergo surgery."

The District Magistrate and the Superintendent of police soon rushed to the hospital. A senior Police Officer of the Malda district has said, " We have initiated a case. A probe has been started. "

BJP's youth wing leader staged a protest against this incident by burning tires on NH-34.

Many party leaders have suffered from injuries during the West Bengal Elections 2021. But this is the first time that a BJP leader has been shot at.

The reaction of Party Leaders

BJP MP Deboshree Chaudhuri stated, " This incident speaks volumes about the culture of political violence in the state."

Malda's TMC leader, Krishnendu Narayan Chaudhuri has denied any involvement of his party. He demanded action against those who are responsible for this attack.

Assembly elections are going on in West Bengal. Five phases are already over. The polling in Malda will take take place in the last phase on April 29.
