Bombay HC directs the state to shift Varavara Rao to Nanavati Hospital

The Bombay HC directs the state government to move Varavara Rao from Tajola Jail to Nanavati Hospital for the next 15days and advised the state to bear the hospital cost for the treatment of the 81-year-old poet. Rao is an alleged accused in the Elgar Parishad case. The court also told the members of the Rao's family to visit him during hospital hours.

Varavara Rao is completely bedded ridden and is not getting medical attention with no change in the catheter for the past 3 months argued Indira Jaising, Senior Lawyer to Live Law on his account during the physical hearing. She added to her statement that the state is ignoring his health while he is in custody and if he did not get the treatment he will die in custody.


The state lawyer, Deepak Thakare, asked the court to shift the alleged to JJ hospital so they can perform all the tests but Indira opposed this direction and revealed that Rao sustained head injuries in July when he was shifted to JJ Hospital. The court hearing the plea directed the state to move Rao to Nanavati Hospital for the next 15 days.
