The Kharif Marketing Season (KMS) 2020-21 for paddy/rice was scheduled to commence from the next week.
In the wake of farmers' protest against three contentious bills, the Centre ordered the commencement of procurement operations for Kharif paddy/rice in Punjab and Haryana with immediate effect on Saturday.
Early arrival of paddy in the 'mandies'
The paddy procurement of the Kharif Marketing Season(KMS) 2020-2021 was scheduled to commence from October 1 in all the key growing states.
However, with the early arrival of paddy in the 'mandies' of Punjab and Haryana, the Government of India ordered immediate procurement from today w.e.f 26 September facilitating farmers to sell their products at the minimum selling price(MSP).
The move came amidst protests
The order came at a time when farmers have staged an uproar against the three contentious bills -- The Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020; and The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020, and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020.
The farmers fear the scraping of the Mandi system and MSP as this will create a trade area for the commercial giants outside the APMC Mandies
