'Convert if want to marry', UP's minor girl accuses a man of threat

A minor girl from Hardoi district of Uttar Pradesh has alleged that a man forced her to convert to his religion "if she wanted to marry him". The incident has been reported from Sahabad area of the district. "The FIR was registered against a person identified only as Azad at the Shahabad police station. The complainant stated that she and the accused were in a relationship for the past two years and the man had promised to marry her," the report quoted Anurag Vats, Hardoi superintendent of police (SP) as saying. The police have also booked the accused for rape as the girl alleged that the man sexually exploited her on the pretext of marriage. After the promulgation of the new "love jihad" law, the Uttar Pradesh police have booked several people for allegedly forcing the girls to convert for marriage. The police have also been accused of high handedness in exercising the law. A few days back, police in Kushinagar district picked a youth and the girl after rumours that the two who were marrying were from different communities. Later, it turned out that the couple was Muslim.
