Dalit Youth Flogged in Ahmedabad over Surname Conflict

A 20-year-old Dalit boy was brutally assaulted by people of upper caste, who accused his trying to look like as one of them taking a ‘Kshatriya’ surname. Based on the filed by the victim at the Sanand GIDC Police Station on Thursday, the main accused Harshad Rajput is arrested.

The attack took place on Wednesday around 10 pm when the victim, Bharat Jadav was waiting for his bus outside the factory gate. According to his statement, two strangers came on the scene & started abusing Jadav using derogatory language against his Caste.

Then Harshad joined the crew to heat the communal argument & hurled many blows at him. Somehow, Jadav saved his life by taking a flee from them.

Police have already registered cases against Rajput & two other absconding criminals under relevant sections of IPC as well as those of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

“We picked up Harshad from his house on Thursday night. He was produced before the magistrate on Friday and sent to judicial custody. We still haven’t identified the others involved. An investigation is underway,” Bhaskar Vyas, deputy superintendent of police, Ahmedabad rural, said.
