The incident took place in the Ukhrul district, 80 km from the state capital, Imphal.

The accused has been identified as Wungshungmi Hungyo. A case was lodged against him after the non-profit People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wrote to the police. It was registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Arms Act, and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

According to sources, PETA worked closely with the Additional Superintendent of Police, Saujanya Singh for the registration of the case.

Although the accused is yet to be apprehended, the Manipur Police is spreading the word.

PETA India's Emergency Response Team Associate Manager, Meet Ashar said, "PETA would like to thank Manipur Police for registering the case and for sending out a clear message that brutality on animals would not be tolerated."

Ashar further said that they have also approached the admin of the Twitter page where the video was first shared to know about its source. He added that no animal deserves to be killed in such a brutal way.

As per researchers, PETA stated the people who commit such cruel acts are often repeated offenders. They move on to hurting other animals or even humans. This makes it imperative for the public to report such cases of cruelty.
