Gangrape Protest: Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi en route to Hathras allowed to meet the victim's family

Congressmen reached the DND toll plaza in huge numbers ahead of the Gandhis visit

Congress delegation led by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have crossed their way through DND toll plaza after being permitted to meet the family of the 19-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted by four upper caste men and killed.

A huge contingent of police was deployed at the Delhi-Noida-Direct(DND) flyway ahead of the meet. The personnel put up barricades at the toll plaza while Section 144 remained imposed across the borders.

Meanwhile, the kin of the deceased demanded a special inquiry from the Supreme Court saying that the Special Investigation team was more of a formality than an act of persecution.

Upon reaching the Toll plaza, the delegation was questioned but later allowed to meet the family.

Several Congress leaders including Shashi Tharoor condemned the handling of the case by the UP government and called it "disgraceful".

ACS(Home) Avnish Awasthi said a maximum of five members can meet the family.

Earlier tod charges were allowed to visit the village after the Special Investigation Team(SIT) had completed its investigation. Officials such as ACS(Home) and DGP also visited the family today.

The gangrape caused a stir nationwide and thousands joined the protest led by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad at the Jantar Mantar in response to the government on Friday.

On Thursday, Rahul Gandhi indulged in a scuffle against the police and was arrested ahead of the meet.

The UP Government had suspended three police officials including Hathras Superintendent of Police Vikrant Vir and ordered narco tests on the accused, relatives and the officers involved.

Meanwhile, protests and demonstrations continued against the gangrape in parts of Bengaluru and Guwahati.
