The Taliban lured a gay man in through social media by offering his escape from Afghanistan and then was gang-raped and beaten.

Under the new militant regime, people belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community are frantic to escape the country, out of fear of harassment and torture, and even death. During the last Taliban rule, they actively executed gay men. In the month of July, a German newspaper, "Bild", reported that a Taliban judge vowed to sentence gay men to death by stoning, or by being crushed by a nine-foot wall.

The victim talked to a man for three weeks on social media before agreeing to meet him in Kabul. However, that 'man' turned out to be a group of Taliban men who used this technique to lure out already scared members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Afghan LGBTQ activist Artemis Akbary reported that the Taliban then gang-raped and beat up the man. Akbary also mentioned that the Taliban members are likely to do this again. He said, "They'll make a profile account and deceive LGBT+ people by pretending they're a member of the community."

This technique of luring gay and bisexual men through the internet has been used even under Ashraf Ghani and Hamid Karjai's mentioned LGBTQ activist Nemat Sadat. He said, "National security officials would make fake profiles and go on Grindr and different Facebook groups and say 'hey look, I really want to meet you' and then basically would take them out and kill them and then throw away their body."
