A woman was fined a penalty of Rupees One Lakh for a false rape accusation. The Punjab and Haryana High Court announced its verdict against the woman for falsely accusing a local Congress Leader.

The bench of justice HNS Gill said that the proceedings are 'false and frivolous. They said that it was an attempt to misuse the process of law and order as well as overawing the authorities.

The Woman registered an FIR against Congress Leader Varun Joshi on June 2, 2020.

She said that allegedly Joshi used to visit her in her office. Then he started raping her. She also claimed that her mother already paid Rupees four lakhs to the accused. The accused allegedly started demanding more money by saying that he had objectionable photos of her.

The Police gave a clean chit to Joshi. After that, the woman moved to the high court, seeking a CBI probe into the matter. In June 2020, the High Court directed the police to record a statement of her. In October, the Director-General of Police (DGP) was asked to form an investigation team. This special investigation team asked for the cancellation of the FIR.

The special investigation team confirmed that the woman and Joshi were in a consensual relationship. But problems arose when the woman's husband came to know about these incidents. The matter escalated to a point of filing a divorce. Thereafter, the woman approached the police, the SIT concluded.

The investigation recorded their call location on the day of the alleged rape. It was found that both their locations were different. Both of them stayed together in a hotel on different dates with the woman's consent. The hotel manager testified about this in the court itself.

The court concluded that this was a perfect example of imposing a fine upon the complainant. The complainant is an employee of the Department of Health. She is directed to pay the fine amount to the Institute Of Blind, Sector 26, in Chandigarh.
