In a bid to spice up its economy, Himachal Pradesh chief minister, Jai Ram Thakur, has announced plans to regulate the cultivation of hemp or cannabis within the State of Himachal Pradesh. Under the NDPS Act 1985, there are legal provisions for cultivation, production, maintenance, and transportation of cannabis within the state. Also, the authorities can make rules for the cultivation of cannabis within the state.
Since, the state produces top-quality cannabis, the seeds of which might be accustomed make paint, biofuel, and ink. Legislators within the hill state are advocating the employment of hemp for years.
The tourism sector has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. The state is in crushing debt. This seems to be above the annual budget and is codependent on the middle for funds. to induce back on its own feet, and to boost the use bar, which has slightly fallen over the amount, the regime is hoping to draw in a growing hemp industry.
Reports suggest that an estimated 2,400 acres in Himachal Pradesh are under organized illicit cultivation of cannabis. By allowing the cultivation of cannabis, for medical and industrial uses, the government hopes to create profits up to 18,000 crores annually.
