Covaxin might be more effective to fight the new strain of the virus
Dr Balram Bhargava said that the Bharat Biotech vaccine has more benefits than other vaccines on the new mutant strain. ICMR, in collaboration with Bharat Biotech, has developed Covaxin. Pune’s National Institute of Virology is another partner of this indigenous vaccine project.
The vaccine is approved for emergency use. The third phase trial is in the process. There is no data on its effectiveness leading to many questions. However, the apex drug controller body has said that the vaccine is effective on it's non-human and human trials so far.
According to experts, Covaxin might be more effective than Oxford vaccine to fight the new strain. This is because Covaxin is an entire vision inactivated Covid-19 vaccine while Oxford vaccine works differently. It yields surface spike protein preparing the immune system to attack the SARS-CoV 2 virus if it later infects the body.
Dr Bhargava told ANI, “We don’t know for how long a vaccine is going to be effective, we don’t know how much of the population we will have to vaccinate to break the virus transmission. What we know is that we have been able to control the pandemic in the country by following Covid appropriate behaviour.”
