India looses another maestro- SP Balasubrahmanyam passes away


The country mourns for legendary Tamil singer S.P.Balasubrahmanyam's demise


On 25th September 2020, India loses SP Balasubrahmanyam, the legendary singer who contributed thousands of songs to the Indian classical heritage of singing, due to a cardiac arrest.

He was born on 4th June 1946 and was an amazing and talented Indian musician, playback singer, music director, actor, dubbing artist, and film producer. He worked predominantly in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, and Malayalam films. He sang over 40,000 songs in 16 different Indian languages and was honored with six National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer along with many other prestigious awards throughout his life for his melodious art.

The death of the legendary singer was reported on 25th September 2020, while he died in a private hospital in Chennai, at the age of 74.


After being diagnosed with mild symptoms of coronavirus, Balasubrahmanyam was admitted to Chennai’s MGM hospital. He had to be shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on 13 August, as his condition deteriorated after a week at the hospital.

He had been admitted to the hospital as he tested positive for coronavirus. MGM Healthcare officially states that the singer died of a cardio-respiratory arrest, despite the maximal life support measures. He reportedly passed away on Friday, 25th September at 1:04 pm, while he had been tested positive for Coronavirus on 5th September.

Members of the film fraternity, along with his fans and other common people got together to organize mass prayers hoping for the singer's steady recovery, while he was in the hospital. Celebrities like Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth along with other celebs in India had sent they are well wishes for the singer's recovery. Singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle along with famous musicians like AR Rahman mourned the loss of his demise as soon as the news of his death broke out.

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned and said that with the demise of SP Balasubrahmanyam, our cultural world is a lot poorer.


Balasubrahmanyam has been advised home quarantine as he showed mild symptoms of Covid-19 but insisted on being admitted to the hospital for the health of his family. While he suffered from the symptoms of the virus, he posted a video on his official Facebook account stating his symptoms such as chest congestion and cold and fever. The singer was put on a heart-lung assistance machine, after two weeks as he suffered a setback in his health.
