The Global Himalayan Expedition (GHE) of India has successfully secured its position among the winners of the United Nations Global Climate Action Award for the year 2020. It is one of the world's first organizations to use tourism and technology, with the aim to bring solar energy to remote communities.
The GHE conducted "Impact Expeditions" in more than 131 villages situated in the remote Himalayan areas. The organization also used a portion of the expedition fees as funding for the capital cost of the hardware, transportation, installation, and training of the village-scale solar micro-grids, that generated over USD 114,000 in income for the villages.
The UN Awards of 2020 specifically focussed on the best instances of what people around the world have been doing to combat Climate Change amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic.
India's efforts to battle against the crisis of climate change during these uncertain times of the pandemic can also be acknowledged as a perfect example of the "Aatma Nirbhar Bharat".
