Indian Literacy Rates, 2020:

The National Statistical Office (NSO) has conducted a survey on 'Household Social Consumption: Education in India as a part of 75th round of National Sample Survey - from July 2017 to June 2018', which provides the state-wise details of literacy rates in India, for the persons among the age of seven years and above.


According to the report, Kerala has once again topped the literacy rate chart of India with 96.2%, followed by Delhi at 88.7%, then Uttarakhand at 87.6%, Himachal Pradesh at 86.6%, and Assam at 85.9%. On the contrary, Andhra Pradesh ranked at the bottom of the chart with a 66.4% literary rate, Rajasthan being the second-worst performer at 69.7%, followed by Bihar at 70.9%, Telangana at 72.8%, then Madhya Pradesh at 73.7%, and Uttar Pradesh at 73%. The study has highlighted that the literacy rates are higher in the urban areas of India with 87.7%, compared to 73.5% in the rural areas of the country. At a national level, the survey reflected a vast difference between the female and male literacy rates, even in the worst-performing states of India. The literacy rates of a female is much lesser in the country being at 70.3%, than men with 84.7% literacy rates. The study also reported the overall literacy rate of India, is at about 77.7%.
