A couple who belonged to different faiths consumed poison at a Meerut Hotel because their parents refused the couple's marriage proposal.
The incident happened in the Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh on Monday, 14th March 2021.
The victims have been identified as Sonu Singh, a resident of Sonepat, Haryana, and Shumayla, a resident of Zakir Colony, Meerut. The couple in love was 20 years old.
The boy, Sonu, had been living with his maternal grandfather's house in the Lisari Gate area of the city.
The couple had apparently booked a room at Magnum Hotel in the Shastri Nagar district claiming that they were husband and wife. They consumed poison together upon reaching the hotel.
While the girl died immediately after, Sonu succumbed a day later at the hospital amidst treatments.
Ajay Sinha, SSP Meerut, said that neither of the couple's family was ready for their marriage.
While Devesh Singh, CO, said that the girl's body was sent for post-mortem after found.
Pramod Kumar, SHO Medical police station, also went on the state that they had searched the hotel room for further leads but so far, no suicide note has been found.
This unfortunate news comes days after another interfaith couple took wedding vows around an 'angeethi' in Meerut and were forced to flee by the police. The incident took place in the Kanker Khera area of the city.
The groom was later booked by the city police under the new Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion law.
The bride's mother was also booked by the police for being a "co-conspirator".
The matter came to light after a video of the wedding went viral. The couple along with their families are on the run as the police hunt for them.
