Jharkhand: 4 minors sexually assaulted at shelter home

The probe came in the wake of complaints by two minor tribal girls from the shelter home alleging that they were being sexually assaulted and tortured for nearly four years at Mother Teresa Welfare Trust.

Image source: catch news Four persons including the manager, his wife, and the warden of a shelter home in Jharkhand’s Jamshedpur were arrested in connection with physical exploitation and sexual molestation of minor girls. The Superintendent police of Jamshedpur city Shubas Chandra Jat said, “On a tip-off to the police, four accused of the case were arrested from Mada in Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh and brought to Jamshedpur on transit remand. All the arrested accused would be produced before East Singhbhum Court, Jamshedpur.” The manager of Mother Teresa Welfare trust, Harpal Singh, his wife Pushpa Tirki, also the chairperson of the East Singhbhum district child welfare committee (CWC), warden Geeta Devi and one more person in connection with the complaint given by minor girls living at the trust. Few minor girls had complained about physical exploitation and sexual molestation, forced work, etc at the shelter home located at Telco in Jamshedpur. Police said the two girls, aged 16 and 17, also gave video-recorded statements, in which they said they were physically and mentally tortured at the home and made to give in to the sexual demands of the perpetrators. The police have informed that all efforts are made to find the two minor girls, who went missing last Friday night while being transferred to Bal Kalyan Ashram, in Jamshedpur. It was also found that Mother Teresa Welfare Trust had no links with the sisters of charity, founded by Saint Teresa, known as Mother Teresa prior to her canonization. A first information report (FIR) was lodged against all the arrested accused and one Tony David with the Telco Police Station, Jamshedpur on June 6 on the complaints of two of the minor girls of MTWT who had accused of sexual assault and torture by the director and others for about four years. The FIR was lodged under various sections of the POCSO Act and all accused were absconding, after FIR. The arrests were made by a police team, constituted by Senior Superintendent of Police, Jamshedpur, Dr Tamil Vanan under the leadership of City SP Jat.
