Jharkhand Scholarship Scam: Chief Minister orders probe into diversion of funds in the alleged scam

Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren ordered immediate action against the scam in the Centre-funded scholarship scheme for poor pre-matric minority students in the state.


A nexus of bank staff, middlemen, school and government employees allegedly siphoned of funds worth Rs 61 crore through Direct Benefit Transfer. The current Chief Secretary took the cognizance of the matter after several letters of complaint were directed since July 2019. The issue was flagged last year, CM reiterated.

The investigation also pointed out that the scam was carried out in layers of verification process for the eligible students. Several instances were registered either bogus beneficiaries or actual beneficiaries did not receive the amount in across six districts – Ranchi, Dhanbad, Latehar, Ramgarh, Lohardaga and Sahibganj.


Religion was altered to benefit from the scheme, Aadhar card details and fingerprints were all fabricated and the money was disbursed for educational institution not pertaining to the respective students.


Chief Secretary Sukhdev Singh told that the verification process has been halted till the probe is completed.
