A 41-year old Mexican journalist, Julio Valdivia, who wrote about the crime in the Gulf Coast state of Veracruz was found decapitated on Wednesday, local media reported. The latest horrific murder of a reporter in one of the most dangerous countries for a journalist.
His body was found with his motorcycle on a railway track in the mountainous area of Tezonapa municipality, about 100km from the state capital, Veracruz. This is the fifth time that a journalist has been killed in Mexico this year, according to media watchdog Reporters Without Borders.
The Minister of Security and Chief of Police in the eastern state of Veracruz, Hugo Gutierrez, condemned the “cowardly murder” of Julio Valdivia, who worked for the newspaper “El Mundo de Veracruz”.
More than 100 journalists have been murdered in Mexico since 2000, and these crimes resulted in only a fraction of the conviction.
