Kolkata: 12 arrested in Topsia for duping foreigners via fake call centre

Kolkata fake call center: A case has been registered under various sections of IPC, including cheating and fraud, among others, as well as sections of the IT Act.




Image Source: New Indian Express A fake call center was busted on Chowbagha Road off EM Bypass by the detective department on Wednesday and 12 people were arrested. Joint CP (crime) Murlidhar Shama said, based on some credible source, about an illegal call centre running in Chowbagha Road. The raid was conducted at 3 am by the Detective department and 12 people were busted, who were duping people based in the US and Australia. The accused used to make VOIP calls and impersonate employees of a leading software security company. Till now, one laptop, one CPU, three hard disc drives, two Wi-Fi routers, a CESE paper bill, one attendance register, and some other incriminating documents have been seized from the place. He further said, “those arrested have been identified as Imroz Khan (32), Md. Dilbar Anish (23), Md. Sohail (24), Peter Bahadur Shakya (26), Md. Rizwan (20), Md. Sohail Khan (20) Huzaifa Hussain (22), Akash Lal Rajak (22), Md. Yasin (43), Md Samir (20), Yogesh Lal (21), and Shashi Gupta (25). They are mostly young and are from the Karaya, Tiljala, Topsia areas of Kolkata”. A case under the IT Act pertaining to sections 43, 66, 66C,66D, and 84B along with IPC sections on cheating, fraud and criminal conspiracy has been registered at the cyber police station. In the last week, this is the second illegal establishment to be busted.
