Ehsan Malik, a native of Shahbazpur village in Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh was shot dead for spitting paan in Bihar’s Siwan district, an official said. He used to sell clothes in the area.
According to police, the incident took place around 8:30 am when Malik was cooking food in the morning inside the house and was also chewing paan. He spits the paan on the road from a window and some of it splattered on a person who was passing by. Enraged, the latter barged into the former’s room and abused him. When Malik objected, he fired at him from point-blank range, causing grievous injuries.
Nawab sustained gunshot injuries on his chest and collapsed on the ground, SP Sahu, investigating officer of Sarai police post, said. He was later rushed to the Sadar hospital in Siwan, by his neighbors where the doctors declared him brought dead.
The assailant identified as Golu Miyan, however, managed to escape after shooting at Malik.
The body of the deceased was handed over to his relatives after postmortem. “Ehsan used to sell garments in the rural areas and was staying in a rented house in Siwan to deal with his local customers,” the SHO said, adding that the accused was produced before a local court, which remanded him to 14-day judicial custody.
Police have, however, failed to recover the weapon used in the crime. “Raids are on to recover the weapon used for killing the businessman,” an investigating officer said.
