Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has met with a road blocker to generate 210 MW of electricity to build a dam on the Umangot River. Two public hearings organized by the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board have been interrupted by the protesters. The first public hearing could not take place at Siangkhanai village under Mwakinyu block in East Khasi Hills district.

The protesting farmers have stopped officials including additional district magistrates at Myungsang village, 20 km from the public hearing site. The farmers did not let any of the officers' vehicles go. The farmers sat on the road in Myansang for the whole day from 5 in the morning and opposed the dam. Explain that the proposed 210 MW Umangot Hydroelectric Project will be constructed on the Umangot River between East Khasi Hills District and West Jaintia Hills District.
If a dam is built, it will connect the Malkinarev region to the Amalarem region by road. Villagers in the villages of East Khasi Hills district, especially the landowners, opposed the project saying that their proposed cultivable land would be submerged due to the proposed hydroelectric project. Villagers said that there is a possibility of drift in the villages in terms of tourism, but once the dam is built on the Umangot river, the water in the river will dry up, especially during the winter season.
