New abortion law enforced in Texas, Biden lashed out at the Supreme Court's refusal

On Wednesday Supreme Court of the United States refused to block a Texas anti-abortion law that bans termination of pregnancy after 6 weeks. The Five-four majority decision of the Supreme Court has raised questions on the right to abortion and also the conservative approach of the court.

In May 2021, the Texas legislature enacted S. B. 8 (the Act). On September 1st 2021, at midnight the Act took place, makes it unlawful for physicians to perform abortions if they either detect cardiac activity in an embryo or fail to perform a test to detect such activity, although this could be months before a viable foetus develops.

Legal experts have noted that the wording is meant to form it very difficult to challenge the law in courts.

On both moral and religious grounds, a strong anti-abortion movement is in place within the US. In India, the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act allows abortion up to 24 weeks of pregnancy.

On Thursday, US President Joe Biden lashed out at the Supreme Court's refusal to block a Texas law banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, warning that it threatens to unleash "unconstitutional chaos."

"By allowing a law to go into effect that empowers private citizens in Texas to sue health care providers, members of the family supporting a girl exercising her right to make a decision on after six weeks, or even a friend who drives her to a hospital or clinic, it unleashes unconstitutional chaos and empowers self-anointed enforcers to possess devastating impacts,".

He added in his statement, "Complete strangers will now be empowered to inject themselves within the foremost private and personal health decisions faced by women," During his statement, Joe Biden mentioned that, "The Supreme Court's ruling overnight is an unprecedented assault on a woman's constitutional rights under Roe v. Wade, which has been the law of the land for nearly fifty years,".
