Pakistan Anti-Corruption Federation Arrests Pivotal Leader Of Opposition Party
On December 30, 2020, Khawaja Asif, a vital leader of the Pakistan Muslim League and former Foreign Minister got arrested for having higher assets than his known sources of income and failed to provide validations. The accused aided under the government of the former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The incident occurred after the opposition party (PML) pressurized Prime Minister Imran Khan to resign from the post until the deadline of January 31, 2020, and threatened him if he doesn't do as been asked, the former ruling party may create hurdles and distress in the country's capital, Islamabad. Members of the Pakistan Muslim League have been holding rallies and marching across Pakistan to create pressure on PM Imran Khan pressing on the demand for resignation. The former PM Nawaz Sharif strongly feels PM Imran Khan is incompetent in running the country and failed to improve the condition of the country's economy. In 1991, when Asif was holding the position of Foreign Minister under Sharif's Government his property amounted to around 51 Lakhs in Pakistani currency. But by 2018, it turned into 22 Crores in Pakistani currency. Nawazish Ali, an official of the National Accountability Bureau said that Asif posses assets beyond proper validation of known sources of income and also confirmed Asif's arrest and taking him in custody.
