Pakistani national managed to contest panchayat elections, probe ordered

UP: A 65-year old Bano Begum, a Pakistani national had become the interim head of Gadau village panchayat, and also she had been a panchayat member from 2015.


She had managed to get Aadhar card and other government documents to pave her way for contesting elections.


Bano Begum has been produced before a local court of Etah (Uttar Pradesh), which sent her to judicial custody.


Bano Begum was arrested on Friday after an FIR lodged against her at Jalesar Police station.

Bano Begum had been on the run since an FIR registered. She had become the interim head of Gadau village panchayat after the death of an elected panchayat pradhan. She had also contested election from the same village and became a Panchayat member in 2015.


According to Police, she is residing in India since the 1980s and got married to a local resident, Akhtar Ali. From then she never returned to her home Karachi.


Since her marriage, she is residing in India on a long term visa, which was regularly extended, last in 2019.
