Rescue officials save many who were found either injured or dead under the collapsed roof
Many were killed and injured when the roof of a crematorium collapsed. This took place on Sunday, January 3, in Muradnagar, Uttar Pradesh. The roof reportedly caved in when over 25 people had taken shelter under it due to heavy rain and hardly anyone got the chance to escape. More than 40 people were initially trapped under.
Most were the relatives of the dead. Police officials, the fire department, and the National Disaster Response Force were sent to the scene. The officials mentioned that the injured count could be higher as some were taken away from the site by their relatives. After rescuing the people, they were admitted to Ghaziabad District Hospital. It is thought that the incident occurred because the building was constructed in an area where frequent water-logging takes place.
The heavy rain caused the soil to become loose, which resulted in the collapse. Iraj Raja, Ghaziabad (rural) Superintendent of Police, said that hours later the incident happened, rescue workers are still going through the ruins to locate more victims.
Ghaziabad's BJP MP, VK Singh reached the site and stated that an investigation has been initiated and strict action will be taken against those found guilty. MLA Ajit Pal Tyagi, Uttar Pradesh minister Atul Garg also reached the spot.
CM Yogi Adityanath announced financial help
Uttar Pradesh's Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath also expressed grief over the loss. He also announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to each of the victim's family, a statement provided by the state government said. He also directed the Divisional Commissioner of Meerut and ADG Meerut zone to submit a report of the same.
