Nizam's army in Hyderabad
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Nizam of Hyderabad
Hyderabad, today is a part of India, but it was not so in the past; it officially became a territory of the Indian Union on 18th September 1948. The Indian Army took over the powerful state of Hyderabad through a war of only five days, which began from 13th September 1948 and lasted till 18th September 1948, fighting against Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VII's forces, the then ruler of the princely state.
'Operation Polo' was the code name of the military invasion on the former independent state of Hyderabad, which is also referred to as 'Operation Caterpillar' at times, also led to massive communal violence. The invasion was plotted when the government of India came to know about the intimate connection between the Nizam of Hyderabad and Pakistan.
The 1948 Siege of Hyderabad is marked as one of the most significant events in Indian history.
