Series of horrific incidents from floating dead bodies to bodies being buried in sand

Another incident came to light, after four days, when bodies of suspected Covid-19 patients were floating on the Ganga river in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, more have been found buried in the sand in Unnao. The officials have wrapped most of the bodies in saffron cloth, however, there is no confirmation if these bodies were of Covid patients.


District Magistrate Ravinder Kumar said they found some bodies buried in an area far from the river. He further added that a search is being conducted for more bodies in that area and mentioned the special team who will carry out the inquiry and actions will be taken accordingly.

Sirish Gupta, a local businessman mentioned, since the death toll has risen, prices of cremation have also shot up, and package for cremations according to Hindu rites, lies between Rs15,000- Rs20,000 and it is unaffordable for a certain section of society, so they are opting for riverside burials.

Hindus revere the Ganga as the holiest of rivers but consigning bodies to it is not part of any religion’s traditions, including Hinduism

Panic grips locals:

These incidents have sparked fears about the scale of the covid crisis in the country. People are grappled with panic, after bodies are found floating in the river and now buried in the sand on banks of Ganga in Unnao, fear spreading of the diseases in the area which has not been spared by the ravaging Covid pandemic. Residents have complained of stench coming from the decomposed corpses and despite the complaints, the administration has taken no action. The locals accused the authorities of ineptitude.

Officials' statements:

Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Tuesday said the central government has taken serious note of the issue and tweeted that concerned must look into the matter immediately. Meanwhile, currently, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, said the last rites of the body should be done according to the person’s religious beliefs.
