Mirabai Chanu wrote her name in sporting history by becoming the first Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic silver medal. After Karnam Malleswari's (bronze winner in the Sydney Games in 2000), She is the second Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in weightlifting,
Due to covid 19 protocols, her smile was hidden by a mask on the podium. but those who know her journey to this medal would know how big it would have been.
After failing a lift of 104 kg in her first attempt, she failed twice in her attempts to pick up 106 kg in both her second and third attempts.
Her several failures didn't let her down.
Not giving up attitude help Chanu to became a world champion as she won the gold medal in the 48 kg category by lifting 194 kg in total (85 kg snatch and 109 kg clean & jerk) in the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships held at Anaheim in the USA. This effort of hers was also a competition record.
She didn't stop there. Her constant desire to achieve success led Chanu to win the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. A total lift of 196 kg giving her the yellow metal.
Her struggles define the story of the phoenix, who rose from the ashes of her disappointment and achieve unmatched success. But this is just the beginning and India expects a lot more from Mirabai Chanu
