Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who lost his credibility to a high toll of deaths because of covid has been alleged with corruption over the covid-19 vaccine.
The Brazilian health minister has announced that he will suspend the USD 324 million contracts to buy 20 million doses of India's Indigenous vaccine, Bharat Biotech's Covaxin, amid an inquiry of an accusation of irregularity against Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro.
“By recommendation of @CGUonline, we decided to temporarily suspend the Covaxin contract.
According to CGU’s preliminary analysis, there are no irregularities in the contract, but, because of compliance, the @minsaude opted to suspend the contract for further analysis,"
The head of the Federal Comptroller General (CGU) Wagner Rosario, said that they will investigate the process of vaccine procurement despite being any irregularity in the contract. The contract for the procurement was signed between the president and the Bharat Biotech through need medicines, the Brazilian pharmaceutical company in February and according to CNN, the vaccine from Bharat Biotech has not been exported to Brazil.
Bharat Biotech has denied any sort of corruption stating that it has adhered to the highest form of compliance and moreover it mentioned that the company has followed a step-by-step approach for the contract and regulatory approval which was an 8-month long process. The price for Covaxin was negotiated at $5 per dose. And the company has received no sort of advance from the Brazilian government.
