A 68-year-old priest who allegedly raped a 10-year-old girl inside temple premises was arrested.
On Tuesday late in the evening the accused, identified as Venkataramanappa, saw the little girl playing outside the temple and enticed her by promising her sweets.
Then, he took her to his son-in-law's house, which is inside the temple premises, and raped her. In the son-in-law's absence, the accused was caretaking the temple, who hails from Chikkaballapura in Karnataka.
According to CK Baba, Bengaluru’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast), the victim's mother was searching for her daughter as it was getting late when a flower vendor hinted that he saw the girl going into the priest's house.
The mother along with neighbors went to the priest's house and found the girl crying outside. Police registered the complaint after the mother narrated the whole incident.
Venkatramanappa was arrested under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act and also under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code.
CCTV camera footage, medical report and the flower vendor’s statement proved imperative in the development of the arrest.
