Chennai: Two armed police officers died in a fatal accident when a BMW car rammed into them near a private school in Mogappair, Chennai. The incident occurred in the early morning of this Monday. The accused was later arrested.
The incident caught on a CCTV camera which showed that the incident took place near about 4.15 am. The two police officers named B Ravindran(32) and V Karthik (34) were on a bike on the Ambattur real estate road. According to the footage, B Ravindran was riding the bike and when he took a right turn near the DAV girls' school, the car rammed into them. Ravindran being grievously injured died at the spot. Karthik was taken to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital where he died at 11:00 am. The two deceased were on duty when the brutal incident occurred. They were going to report at the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) at Koyambedu. Their duty was to help to streamline buses arriving from different districts.
On the other hand, the accused was identified as College students - Rohit Surya (21), Varun Sekar(20), and Amarnath (25). They were returning from a birthday party. Amarnath was driving the car. No drunken drive has been reported though. As per their statement, Amarnath couldn't be able to control the car because of speeding and they didn't notice the police officer taking a right turn.
Accused have been reported under section 279 (rash driving) and section 304 (2) (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, if the act is done with the knowledge that it is likely to cause death) of India penal code, said Deputy Commissioner for Traffic MM, Ashok Kumar to TNM. "Ravindra has left behind a family of two children, whereas Karthik had a wife and elderly parents.
It is up to the families of the accused to take moral responsibility if they want to give any compensation to the deceased family", Ashok Kumar added to his statement.
