Following the Durga Puja celebrations, West Bengal has seen a significant increase in coronavirus cases. West Bengal reported 846 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, with 792 recoveries and 12 fatalities. With this, the total caseload has increased to 15,84,492 cases, with a total death toll of 19,033 throughout the state.

This Friday, Kolkata, which appears to be suffering the price for its puja shopping and pandal hopping, registered 242 new Covid infections. Officials attribute the increase in COVID cases to poor safety precautions followed by people during the Durga puja celebrations last week.

According to an official bulletin, Kolkata reported 232 new cases on Thursday, followed by North 24 Parganas (143). The unfettered crowds in Kolkata during the celebrations fueled fears amongst public health experts of a third wave of the pandemic, prompting police to close a Durga Puja pandal built after the Burj Khalifa to the public.

In the last 40 hours , 14 people have died in the state, bringing the total number of active cases to 753. In the last 24 hours, 775 individuals have been rescued. After examining 33,018 samples, the state's daily positivity rate was 2.52%, indicating that new cases were discovered every day.
